Top Foods to Stop Eating Before Bedtime

Dinner should not be served in the late hours of the evening. You also should be careful what you consume as your last meal of the day. Since the body will be resting during the night, you don’t want to disturb the digestive system. As a result, you should be conscious of what you’re consuming to see if it’s doing more good than harm to your health. Here are some foods to avoid eating before going to bed.

Spicy Foods

Capsaicin is abundant in spicy foods such as hot sauce and curries. Such dishes demand a lot of energy to digest the spices, and if you eat them late at night, you’re likely to have trouble sleeping. Capsaicin raises body temperature by interfering with the body’s thermoregulation process. This interrupts sleep owing to the discomfort caused by the increased temperature.

However, spicy foods may not necessarily be the cause of your insomnia. You must determine whether your insomnia occurs when you consume spicy foods or on any other day. However, ice cream is likely to disrupt your sleep if consumed before bedtime. Because ice cream requires time to get digested, you would be unable to sleep while your body is still digesting it.

Other sweet foods, such as candies and cakes, have the same effect. As a result, you should avoid high-sugar items that cause your blood sugar to surge and then drop. A drop in blood sugar signals an emergency to the adrenals, raising cortisol levels and awakening the body from its rest.

Caffeinated Foods and Drinks 

You should not consume caffeine-rich beverages and chocolates before bedtime because they can cause insomnia. Chocolates may not contain as much caffeine as coffee, but they contain amino acids that will keep you awake if consumed right before bedtime.

The chocolate’s caffeine content may not be as high, but it has an amino acid that will keep you awake when taken just before your sleeping hours. Chocolate’s high caffeine content makes it unsuitable for late-night munching. Caffeine can stay in your system for hours, so instead of having it at night, have chocolate or a caffeinated beverage during the day.

Tomatoes and Tomato Products

Tomatoes and other citrus fruits are nutritious because they are rich in vitamin C. On the other hand, they should not be ingested before sleep because they can induce acidity and heartburn if not well digested. Additionally, tomatoes interfere with your sleeping patterns as they contain amino acids, boosting brain activity and postponing sleep.

Tomato-based foods, such as tomato sauce, are likewise not recommended for late-night intake due to excessive acidity and heartburn. If you wish to eat such foods, make sure you eat them at least three hours before bedtime so your body can completely digest the foods.
