1. Interstate 75 Near Calhoun

In December of 1990, fog conditions were bad in Tennessee. Around 9 am, a car accident began that eventually resulted in the deaths of 13 people.

In the time since this event, more safety systems have been put in place to ensure that the public is informed about fog so that a similar accident won’t happen again.

2. Carlton County, Kentucky

On May 14th, 1988, a drunk driver hit a bus that was transporting a youth group back from a theme park.

The driver hit the bus head-on, rupturing the gas tank in the process. 27 people died in the crash, and even more were injured. This car accident helped bolster the popularity of M.A.D.D., or Mothers Against Drunk Driving. M.A.D.D. was founded after a child was killed in a hit and run by a drunk driver in 1980.

3. Portland, Maine

Speeding is also a major danger when it comes to driving. This accident resulted in the deaths of seven people. On May 9th, 2004, a driver with a suspended license tried to pass a car while speeding. The driver lost control of the vehicle and collided with a tree instead.

4. Schoharie, New York

Most major car accidents involve multiple vehicles. Unfortunately, this limo accident in New Work was triggered by just one car. No one in the vehicle was wearing a seatbelt, which often exacerbates the death toll in driving accidents.

The limo was also speeding. When the brakes of the limo failed, it rain through a store and into a ravine. 20 people were killed in this accident. Since issues with the brakes had previously been reported, the owner of the vehicle was found guilty of negligent manslaughter.

5. 1-5, California

Fog isn’t the only thing that can make it hard to navigate the roads. Out west, dust storms have caused issues in the past. On November 29, 1991, this lead to one of the worst car accidents in American history. 17 people died in the 104-car pileup.

6. Interstate 10

The largest accident involving multiple cars also occurred in California, near Los Angeles. Fog caused a tractor-trailer to crash into a concrete barrier on November 3rd 2002. 216 cars were impacted by this crash, but luckily no one died as a result.
